Mel Bay Presents “Joe Diorio Solo Guitar Concepts” MB20975DVD
Here’s a chance to see and hear the great Joe Diorio in essentially a solo concert. He starts with the classic “Stella by Starlight” and works his magic with his close intervals and his patented 4th excursions. Always done with a bit of humor which is a Joe Diorio trademark. He always seems to get in the moment when he plays anything. The creative juices are still flowing from this video from 2001. Joe goes into a basic explanation of what he just played on “Stella”. He calls the chords “Fragments’ or what I like better, “Bits and Pieces” Aside from the artistry of Joe, he is a consummate professional as well.
The personal touch Joe gives here is a lovely contrast to the “heady” jazz teaching that seems to be so prevalent today. Having played with Joe so often, I can assure you the information he imparts is of the best quality. Joe has always had this idea of “left brain, right brain”. People that know and have studied with him can tell you about that. In this video, he just plays and explains it very succinctly. I especially like the idea of dealing with the melody as a really important part of solo guitar. It seems obvious to mention the melody, but the melody is often lost these days.
The next tune is another classic, “Autumn Leaves”. Lots of open strings and 6th intervals.
Remarkable subtlety and thoughtfulness as is usual for Joe.
This is a must for all. There is much humor and entertainment for all to enjoy.
The only criticism is the guitar distorts a little. Never mind! This is Joe Diorio and the man can play! I think an alternate name for the DVD could be called, “Nobody Polishes Shoes Anymore” When you see it, I think you’ll know what I mean.
